Tina Brooks의 작품이지만 약관의 불타는 트럼페터Freddie Hubbard의 블로잉이 압권인 그런 앨범이다. Bluenote 앨범들을 듣다보면 참 하이헷소리와 고음역대를 정말로 잘 잡아주고 있는 그런느낌을 항상 받는다. 참 오랜만에 이 앨범 듣게 되는것 같다. 원주에 이 앨범이 있는지 궁금하네. 팔아먹었던가…ㅎㅎㅎ 암튼 오랜만에 신나는 하드밥 한곡!!!!

그 아이는 울음을 멈출수 없다고 했다. 가뿐 숨을 고르려 애쓰며 뱉어 내듯 말했다. 참을 수 없어.잠들 때가 되면 긴 베게와 쿠션을 쌓아서 보호벽을 만들고 매트리스와 매트리스가 닿는 사이에 파고 들어 흡족한 표정을 짓는다.
자기 앞의 생은 부모에게 버려진 아랍계 소년 모모가 은퇴한 거리의 여자로 역시나 같은 처지의 여자들의 사생아들을 양육하는 로자 아줌마와 지낸 한 시기를 그리고 있다. 영민하고 천진난만한 아이의 1인칭 시점으로 풀어낸 이 소설은 그런 이유로 더욱 애처롭다. 글을 읽으며 모모의 까만 눈동자를 떠올리곤 그의 익살스러움에 같이 웃고 조숙한 그 인생 경험담에 가슴 저렸다. 주어진 삶이 가혹하지만 이를 의식하지않고 살아가는 어린이의 파릇파릇한 생명력은 마음 깊은 곳을 자꾸 건드린다. 각자에게 주어진 길을 굳이 비교하지 않는다면 그것은 고통스런 굴절이 아닌 다만 하나의 결이 아닐까? 하고 생각해본다. 책말미에 모모의 말로 마무리한다. ’라몽 아저씨는 내 우산 아르튀르를 찾으러 내가 있던 곳까지 다녀 오기도 했다. 감정을 쏟을 가치가 있다는 이유만으로 아르튀르를 좋아할 사람은 아무도 없을테고 그래서 내가 몹시 걱정했기 때문이다. 사랑해야 한다.’
카롤린 봉그랑의 밑줄 긋는 남자의 주인공 콩스탕스는 에밀 아자르란 필명 뒤로 숨었던 로맹가리라는 작가를 연모한다. 소설의 첫장에서 콩스탕스는 그의 책을 읽다 잠들고 러시아계 유대인인 그의 아버지가 에이젠슈타인의 영화에 출연한 배우이기에 아버지를 통해 그를 느껴보려 에이젠슈타인의 전작을 관람하고 그가 점심식사를 하던 식당들을 죄다 순례하며 같은 메뉴를 시키고 생전에 그가 살던 바크Bac가를 서성인다.
자기 앞의 생은 에밀 아자르란 이름으로 발표한 로맹가리의 3번째 소설로 1975년에 발표하여 같은해 공쿠르 상을 수상한다. 이미 하늘의 뿌리로 56년에 수상한바 있지만 그가 철저히 신분을 감추고 가공의 인물로 활동했기에 가능한 일이였다.(공쿠르 상은 한작가에게 단 한번의 수상 기회가 있을 뿐이다) 이미 성공한 작가로 그 자신 ‘파리풍’이라고 부른 명성과 문단의 인간관계등을 벗어나 완전히 새롭게 다시 시작해보려 꾸민 일이였다. 총 31편의 소설을 발표한 로맹가리는 1980년 12월 2일 ‘에밀 아자르의 삶과 죽음’이란 자신이 곧 에밀 아자르 라는 유고와 짧은 유서를 남긴채 자살한다. 그의 유서의 끝은 이러하다.
“나는 마침내 완전히 나를 표현했다.”

‘I Softly Surrender (To You)’ by Down To The Bone [Crazy Vibes And Things, 2002]
Down to the Bone set the stage to expand beyond their jazz-groove scene beginnings on Crazy Vibes and Things. Producer/arranger Stuart Wade leads the same tight community of musicians featured on Spread the Word, including Neil Angilley, Shilts (a best-selling artist in his own right), Paul Turner, Adrian Revell, and Tony Remy. Wade also wrote or co-wrote the CD’s ten compositions with Angilley and Shilts. The recording opens with the radio hit “Electra Glide,” a smooth, soulful track that features the grooving interplay of Tony Remy’s wah-wah techniques and Shilts’ smoky alto and tenor saxophone riffs. Neil Angilley adds the finishing touches with his strong melodic keyboard improvisations, giving the song a more soulful resonance. Top dance picks are the title track and “Searching for a Simple Groove,” while “My One and All,” which features Hill St. Soul vocalist Hilary Mwelwa, is a midtempo song full of energy and fresh grooves. “Searching for a Simple Groove” is fresh and fun. Every listener’s choice here is a nice surprise and is ripe with Down to the Bone’s trademark horn riffs, breezy guitar licks, smooth jazz, and groove.

‘Be My Love’ by Marco Pereira [Essence, 2007]
Marco Pereira is one of the foremost interpreters of Brazilian music; on this studio session the talented guitarist covers works by many of its greatest composers, accompanied by bassist Natallino Neto and percussionist Marcio Bahia. Highlights include the playful romp through “Mulher Rendeira” and the intimate “Luz Negra.” a medley of songs by the late guitarist Baden Powell. Pereira’s lyrical side is best appreciated in his own pieces, the soothing “Plainte” and the infectious dance “Carioca.” Reed player Paul McCandless is added on four tracks, playing oboe, bass clarinet, English horn or soprano sax. Pereira’s two solos, the dreamy “Be My Love” an overdubbed duet with himself of Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Eu Te Emo,” are also gems. Highly recommended!

내가 처음 이 소설을 접한 계기는 중학교 1학년 때 외신을 통해서였다. 당시 마틴 스콜세지 연출로 영화화된 예수 그리스도 최후의 유혹The Last Temptation of Christ(1988)이 카톨릭 근본주의자들의 상영금지 요구와 미국 기독교 근본주의자들의 상영 반대 데모가 들끓는다는 내용이었다.
이 소설은 예수가 골방에서 인간적인 욕망을 채찍질로 다스리는 장면으로 시작한다. 청년기에 마케도니아의 아토스 산 수도원(이 곳 수도원에는 아직까지도 여성의 출입이 금해져있다)에서 금욕적인 종교생활을 접한 카잔차키스의 실제 경험이 녹아들어 이성과의 사랑 그로 인해 자신의 아이를 낳아 가정을 이루는 등의 가장 인간적인 바램을 갈구하는 사람의 아들로서 예수의 모습이 생생하게 표현되어 있다.
내면으로의 변화로 하나님의 바실레이아를 추구한 예수와 열심당원(젤롯당-기원 후 6년 갈릴리의 유다의 조세 거부 봉기를 그 근원으로 보는 로마로부터 유대의 독립을 주장한 급진적 민족주의 집단. 유대-로마 전쟁의 주력세력으로 기원후 73년 마사다 요새에서 끝까지 항전하다 전원 자결을 택했다)으로 현실적이고 정치적인 메시아를 갈구한 유다의 대립이 흥미롭다.
작품 속에서 유다와 바랍바( 이스라엘 총독인 빌라도 Pilate가 예수와 바랍바(살인범) 중 누구를 십자가형에 처할것인지 여부를 대중들에게 물어본때 등장하는 인물)를 젤롯당원으로 그리고 있는데 57년에 발표되어 큰 반향을 일으킨 이 소설은 이후 예수를 소재로한 저작에 영향을 끼친다 1967년 영국 맨체스터 대학 브랜든 교수는 예수와 젤롯당이란 책에서 예수 제자중 적어도 3명 이상이 젤롯당원이었으며 예수 또한 심정적으로 동조했을 것이라고 주장한다. 또 앤드류 로이드 웨버의 뮤지컬 지저스 크라이스트 수퍼스타에서 예수를 기존질서에 반항한 체제전복자로 그리고 막달라 마리아에게 인간적인 연정을 품은 것으로 묘사한 것도 이 작품에 영향 받은바가 크다고 본다.
크레타 출신으로 프란체스코 수도사들이 운영하는 학교에서 교육받아 그 종교적 세례를 받고 이후 아테네와 파리에서 대학 생활을 한 카잔차키스는 그리스도에서 니체로 불교로 전향하고 러시아 혁명에 동조하는 사회주의자로 말년에 이르러서 다시 그리스도에게 회귀하는 다채로운 사상적 편력을 거치는데 이런 저자의 모든 일생이 작품 안에서 예수와 등장인물의 대화로 고스란히 드러나며 유년기의 크레타에서의 생활과 이후에도 지속된 평범한 사람들에 대한 애정이 갈릴리의 농부와 어부 양치기 예루살렘의 선술집 주인, 시골의 촌부의 모습을 토속적인 어휘로 한층 더 생생하고 맛깔나게 그려내게 한다.
기록자로서 마테오를 그린점, 요한에게 건네는 예수의 묵시적 가르침, 또 사울의 등장과 책의 말미의 사울과 예수의 대화 등을 보면 그가 성서(마가,마태,누가복음과 요한복음)에 얼마나 해박하며 이를 얼마나 철저하게 자신의 것으로 소화해냈는지를 알수가 있다. 복음서의 구성처럼 처음 수도원에서 꺠달음을 얻고 복음을 전할 때 예수는 율법을 넘어서는 인류애와 보편적 윤리를 말하는 지혜의 예수로, 선지자 요한을 만난 후에 하느님의 가르침이 도래함을 선포하고 심판의 날이 올것을 강조하는 묵시적인 예수로 표현되어 있는 점이 그러하다. 흥미로운 점은 예수가 사전에 유다를 자신의 뜻을 이룰 협조자로 그에게 자신을 사두개인과 바리새파에게 넘길 것을 부탁하고 유다 역시 이를 일종의 사명감으로 수락하는 점이다. 유다는 작품 속에서 끊임없이 예수와 대립각을 이루는 인물로 그려지는 한편 그에대한 애정 또한 가장 큰 인물로 그려진다.
제목이 뜻하는 바 그리스도 최후의 유혹은 인간적인 욕망, 사랑이었다. 십자가에 못박혀 혼미한 상태의 꿈속에서 벌어지는 막달라 마리아와의 육체적인 사랑, 또한 마르타와 마리아 자매와 자녀를 갖고 일생을 해로하는..무엇이 꿈이고 어떤 것이 현실인지..곳곳에 인간에 대한 통찰이 번뜩이는 매력적인 작품이다.
나는 아무것도 바라지 않는다. 나는 아무것도 두려워하지 않는다. 나는 자유다.

이시카와 타쿠보쿠는 1896년생으로 26세의 나이로 생을 마감한 일본의 시인이다. 주로 5.7.5.7.7의 31자 3행 형식의 단가(하이쿠)를 지었다. 5년1변설이란 말이 있을 정도로 격변기이던 메이지 시대에 이와테 현 모리오카에서 태어났다. 부친은 절의 주지로 늙으막에 낳은 외동아들을 무척 사랑했다. 그의 시의 어린아이 같은 천진난만함도 여기서 쉬이 정착하지 못한 방랑벽도 여기에 기인하는 바가 크다. 동네에서 신동 소리를 들으며 모리오카 중학에 진학 했으나 학업을 반년 앞두고 학내데모와 수학 컨닝 사건으로 자퇴한다. 한국의 전후 고도 성장기 같던 당시 일본 분위기에서 중학 중퇴자로 늘 능력에 맞는 일을 찾지 못해 가난에 시달렸다. 아버지의 은퇴로 가세도 기울고 첫사랑과 결혼하였으나 생활고를 못이겨 아내는 딸을 데리고 가출하고 이 후 태어난 아들은 생후 20일만에 사망하고 감정적으로 동조하던 사회주의 운동은 1910년의 대역사건으로 다수의 무정부주의자, 사회주의자가 검거되어 그 중 12명이 사형됨으로 그 싹이 뿌리 째 뽑힌 현실 속에서 1912년 3월 어머니마저 폐결핵으로 사망. 본인도 4월 13일 같은 병으로 삶을 달리한다. 늘 빛을 보지 못한 그의 시가 주목 받은 것은 태평양전쟁에서 일본이 패망한 이후이다. 패전 이후 자신을 반성하고 돌아보게된 일본에서 그의 시는 재조명 받고 사회주의 리얼리즘 시인으로 평가 받았다. 최근 버블 경제 붕괴로 잃어버린 10년을 겪은 일본에서 다시 한번 주목 받았다.

A powerful trio outing, Joey Calderazzo’s self-titled Columbia debut is comprised almost entirely of fine original compositions, in addition to Bill Evans’ haunting “Time Remembered” and Michael Brecker’s hard-swinging “Slings and Arrows.” Bassist John Patitucci and drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts provide an unwavering and hip rhythmic foundation for the blazing pianist. Calderazzo’s tunes range from the richly contrasting waltz feels of “The Oracle,” “Haiku,” and “Catania” to the all-out uptempo fury of “Detonation.” Combining melodic ingenuity, harmonic adventurism, and sheer aggressiveness of attack, Calderazzo’s playing on this record stands as a yardstick against which all other post-bop pianists can be measured. ~ David R. ‘Nanu’ by Chucho Valdés [New Conceptions, 2004 Blue Note]
Although pianist Chucho Valdés starts things off with a precise and danceable interpretation of Ernesto Lecuona’s “La Comparsa” on New Conceptions, the classical and operatic themes explored on 2002’s Fantasia Cubana: Variations on Classical Themes are largely implied this time around. Valdés is a superb classically trained technician with a lush ear for harmony. This, combined with an expansive knowledge of the jazz “tradition,” allows him to craft solos that often touch on both late-era John Coltrane and the elegant athleticism of Art Tatum. He brings all sides to bear here on works by Miles Davis and Duke Ellington as well as some original compositions. Notably, the original ballad “Nanu” finds Valdés mixing Claude Debussy-like impressionism with Tatum-like blues runs against a plaintive cello solo from Maylin Sevila. Similarly, he turns Davis’ “Solar” into a post-bop, Latin-style inferno featuring the explosive tenor sax of Irving Luichel Acao Tierra. Most impressive though may be his original mix of swing and Afro-Cuban rhythm patterns on “Sin Clave Pero Con Swing,” in which, by moving from bop to blues to descarge to bolero, he deftly disproves the long-standing misconception that Afro-Cuban jazz must be played with a clave. By at once respecting and defying musical tradition, Valdés has crafted one of the most accomplished and invigorating albums of his career.

Since the Rippingtons do Russ Freeman’s bidding, he hasn’t found it necessary to do a full-fledged, regular solo album since he founded the group in 1986. (There have been duo albums with David Benoit and Craig Chaquico as well as a solo holiday record, however.) But listeners “started encouraging me to ‘step out’ more and to play more guitar,” he writes in the liner notes to Drive, and “hence, this album,” his first such release since 1985’s Nocturnal Playground. That statement is the key to what distinguishes the disc from a Rippingtons album. Although Freeman has called upon a few guest musicians, with Chris Botti contributing muted trumpet work to “Soul Dance,” Jeff Lorber keyboards to “Brighter Day,” and Eric Marienthal sax to “Anywhere Near You,” the tracks are designed as showcases for Freeman’s guitar playing, not otherwise leaving room for other soloists. The Freeman fans who encouraged him no doubt will find the result satisfying, but the overall musical direction is no different from that of the Rippingtons. As usual, Freeman has built a series of bright, bubbly percussive tracks (he and two others are credited with “rhythm programming”), over which he solos melodically on either electric or acoustic guitar for three to five minutes, after which the tunes fade out. A version of Don Henley’s “Boys of Summer” hews closely to the original, and the take on Grover Washington, Jr.’s “East River Drive” is another homage; the rest are originals. There are hints of R&B and Latin influences, but they never become more than hints as the music rolls along pleasantly. Anyone supposing that Freeman might take the opportunity of the altered billing to try something new would be mistaken; for better or worse, Drive isn’t going to change anyone’s mind about the guitarist.
